Extensively managed grasslands as natural carbon sinks – Practical implementation and requirements for CAP measures

Host: Brod Ecologic Society in collaboration with DVL and Landcare Europe

Thematic focus:

• Grasslands as carbon sinks and its benefits for biodiversity & the water cycle
• Situation of grasslands in Europe (including CAP)
• Presentation of challenges and best-practice examples across Europe on the practical implementation of extensively managed grasslands from the perspective of farmers Landcare(-like) organisations and administration
• Roundtable discussion on success factors and necessary regulatory changes in the CAP for fostering extensively managed grasslands as natural carbon sinks

Programme:

Day 0 (10 June 2024): Arrival, optional dinner (costs not covered by project)

Day 1 (11 June 2024): Presentations & Roundtable discussions (full day), optional: evening excursion including dinner to Natura 2000 pastures of the wetlands «Gajna»

Day 2 (12 June 24): Excursion to Lonjsko Polje Nature park + farm visit (full day)

Day 3: (13 June 24): Internal meeting of EUKI project team members

Goal:

The experts will discuss a focus paper on extensively managed grasslands in the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Experts will receive an input paper including preliminary positions 14 days prior to the workshop.

Cost cover:

The workshop is part of the project “Landcare Europe Captures Carbon - Supporting Natural Climate Protection in Agricultural Landscapes” funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the European Climate Initiative (EUKI). Cost for 25 experts can be covered, including food, accommodation and travel expenses up to 500€ per person. Experts will be chosen according to their background and geographic allocation.

Participation for one day only is possible. Please register till March, 29th. After registering you will be informed on admission in beginning of April by the host Brod Ecological Society-BED.
